Harare International Airport

Located 7 miles from the city of Harare is the Harare International Airport, which is one of the well known airports in the African continent. Every week, over and above 300 flights depart from this airport to several international destinations.

History

Once it was decided that Zimbabwe’s original aerodrome could no longer fulfill its needs, the new airport was commissioned in 1956 and built within the next year, costing over £900,000. Run by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe and services both civilians and the Air Force, which has a base on the southern side of the runway. The current efforts of Harare International Airport to refurbish its runway will end up in it becoming the longest in Africa.

In the early nineties, Harare International Airport served many major airlines even when several airlines said no to fly to Republic of South Africa citing some political reasons. Irrespective of all the tension, the airport operated flights non-stop to Australia, UK and many other popular European destinations as well.
